CORONET WILDFLOWER TURF SELECTED FOR
JUBILEE RIVER EMBANKMENT RESTORATION

The Jubilee River diversion scheme is the largest of its kind in the country and, as an integral part of the project, the Environment Agency ensured landscape treatments incorporated wildflowers and other planting with a local provenance, providing maximum benefits for the local environment in terms of ecology, landscape and recreational value. The Agency was mindful this philosophy should be rigidly adhered to in the planning stages for restoration of a 300m stretch of embankment affected by heavy flooding. Their brief stipulated a grassed finish should be used as a starting point but also acknowledged this alone would appear too urbanised and not in keeping with the surrounding environment. Bearing in mind these factors and to be consistent with the riverbanks already established patterns, Atkins, as part of the landscape design consortium, proposed wildflower planting as the ideal solution.

A number of options were considered. Conventional seeding was ruled out as being too lengthy a process and with the probability of only giving a patchy end result, especially as seeding would take place during the Autumn. Conventional turfing with plug planted wildflowers was another possibility discarded on cost and time consumption. Research eventually led them to pre-sown wildflower soil-less turf from Coronet Turf. Coronet could not only provide the extensive mix of wildflower planting required but were able to supply material in large roll sizes of approx. 20m length and 2m width in just eight weeks from order for quick and easy laying on site. The embankment's entire length with 4700 sq.m of cover was then laid in only six days. Tilhill were responsible for implementation on site and their Site Manager, Julian Hollingdale comments: 'environment mitigation is a significant part of our business and we take special care in procurement and resourcing for this type of scheme. We were particularly pleased with the Coronet product and have the opportunity of ensuring successful establishment as part of our 5 year maintenance contract with the Environment Agency'

Coronet's 'big' rolls are obviously beneficial when time is a factor but there other significant advantages to be gained. Producing the turf on an impermeable membrane results in all root development being contained within the turf, creating a mat of roots that gives tremendous strength whilst handling, with less stress to the turf during lifting and laying. All grasses in the mix are native to the British Isles and are chosen to complement the flowers, not compete with them. This allows the flowers to succeed; rather than be swamped by the grasses, a not uncommon problem with conventional soil based wildflower turf or most wildflower seeding. The formation of a dense sward, combined with the large roll sizes, means that the turf acts as a weed blanket allowing plants to establish and preventing weed seeds as well.

Coronet Turf believe their pre-sown soil-less Wildflower Turf is the only product of this nature currently available on the market today.

PARLIAMENT SQUARE RESCUED BY CORONET TURF

Faced with the problem of how to reinstate Parliament Square in time for the Millennium celebrations after work strengthening the tube last year, London Underground and the Royal Parks chose the quickly laid, soil-free system supplied by Coronet Turf. David Mole of London Underground who had first seen the turf at the Saltex 1999 Exhibition said:

"The quality of this turf is exceptional and choosing Coronet Turf saved the day - laying was speeded up dramatically despite very difficult weather conditions due to the large 40m2 rolls that were supplied".

The turf was grown to order and ready for delivery six weeks later. As Coronet Turf is soil free its inert growing medium and high quality seed combine to offer a weed free product suitable for such a prestigious site.

Flood and coastal protection from Coronet Turf

Coronet Turf produces top quality soil free turf for all landscaping situations, with an extensive product range including turf for lawns, pitches, tees and greens, as well as specialising in reinforced turf for erosion control and soil stabilisation. The turf is grown incorporating a number of different types of reinforcing materials that are selected according to the customer's requirements. It is produced and delivered within eight weeks (from April to September) so the reinforcing material can be tailored to suit specific needs. This applies equally to the grass seed mix.

Recent successful applications have included a coastal project in Suffolk, involving 14,000 m2 of Coronet Turf incorporating Enkamat (a three dimensional geomat) which was used to create a managed retreat, where the sea wall was breached to promote the development of marshland, but the retaining bank needed stabilising. From the site in Suffolk, Maccaferri's Tim Parsons said,

"Coronet Turf answered our needs precisely. Instant reinforced grass that you just roll out and job done. It's the quickest way to get immediate erosion control and it looks beautiful from day one."

In another case at the Orgreave Open Cast Colliery near Rotherham, the River Rother had to be diverted and 9000m2 of reinforced Coronet Turf was used on the new river bank to control erosion during flooding.

Another smaller project saw 2500m2 of Coronet Turf reinforced with Bidim (a polypropylene needle punched geotextile) used at the Carmarthen Bypass. In this case, the turf was used to line drainage channels to prevent soil subsidence.

Coronet Turf is ideal for use in situations where soil stability and a green cover are required quickly to prevent erosion. Due to the production process the turf is lightweight, easy to handle and is very quick to establish itself into the soil, thus aiding rapid soil stability.

BARRATTS SHOW HOME CHOOSES CORONET

CORONET TURF (tel. 01256 771222) have been chosen by Barratts Homes Southern to supply their unique soil free turf for the show house and gardens at their prestigious Wentworth Gate project, Virginia Water, Surrey.

Barratts project co-ordinator Jim Dennis says the contractors doing the groundswork are delighted with the turf as it is very quick and easy to lay, and of the highest standard:

"the turf is excellent and everyone on site is envious of the gardens and their future owners, and wish their lawns were of the same standard!"

James Hewetson-Brown, Coronet's Marketing Manager, knew that the turf would provide the quality finish required but was pleased by how good the end results were.

Our photograph shows the front garden with overlooking houses and the show home and garden can be viewed at any time by ringing Barratts Southern on 01483 505533 for an appointment.
