Coronet turf can produce any greens or tees mix to suit the customer.
In the case of Walhampton
GC (see photos) a 40% Raisa Chewings Fescue, 40% Barcrown
Slender Creeping Red Fescue and 20% Avalon Velvet Bent was required.
This was grown in the late summer/autumn and took eight weeks to produce
the turf. The turf was laid over the winter and the greens were ready
to use in early May.
The advantage to using the soil-less turf were greatly valued by the
course, for a number of reasons. The bespoke mix was grown at relatively
short notice and was delivered as the greens were ready. Due to the
large roll size, its light weight and the individual roll strength (i.e.
no wastage or disintegrating rolls) the greens were very quick to lay.
Once the turf was laid the speed of establishment was far quicker than
conventional turf due to the fact that the roots of the turf are not
cut during the lifting process. This is unique to soil-less turf and
gives very quick establishment so the 'laying to playing' time is shorter
than with conventional turf.
The principles are the same for the tees and the reduced laying to
playing time is of even greater help here as they are more prone to
wear, so robust establishment is essential.
